Light the Path of Egress for the Holidays

Sage Bourgeois - Monday, November 23, 2015

The Holidays are upon us and now’s a good time to make sure your lights are working properly and get them hung in all the right places. No, not the strands of pretty holiday lights. We are talking about exit and emergency lighting in your restaurant or place of business. These safety devices light the path of egress for everyone inside a facility.

So, why is emergency lighting so important? The answer may seem obvious, but people often do not appreciate the importance of exit signs and emergency lights. When there is an emergency in a building, all occupants and visitors must be informed of the most efficient way to exit the building. Not every person is familiar with a building’s layout. Visitors or employees who are in a different part of the complex other than their normal work area will rely on exit signs to assist in locating the closest, safest way out of the building in the event of an emergency evacuation. If smoke affects visibility, exit signs may be critical in finding the way to safety. To enable the evacuation of occupants and visitors in the most efficient manner, certain rules must be followed when designing and installing exit signs.

Exit signs and emergency lights are generally not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about the holidays. The fact remains that emergency lighting  and exit signs are essential for accidents or catastrophic events that require a safe and smooth evacuation from a building. These safety products provide illumination allowing people to see clearly, avoid obstacles and move confidently to the nearest exit in a crisis. Emergency ballasts allow an existing light fixture to operate in emergency battery mode during a power outage. In the event of a power failure, the emergency battery ballast operates the fixture, powering the lamp for a minimum of 90 minutes from the built-in backup battery. So, when you consider your holiday lighting arrangement, don’t forget about emergency lighting as an essential component.
